When you think of celeb sisters, you probably think of Sister Sledge (for my fabulously “mature” readers), Venus & Serena, Beyonce & Solange, Tia & Tamera, and Toni + the Braxton Clan. But when I think of this special group of women, the Allen sisters, Phylicia and Debbie that is, are top of mind! I absolutely adore these two. That’s why I’m inducting them into my Brown Bella Beauty Spotlight!
Phylicia Rashad and Debbie Allen are my sheros when it comes to theatrical talent. Both tout an impressive performance resume, along with accolades to match. Who didn’t love Phylicia Rashad as Claire Huxtable? That beaming smile, her sassy intelligence, and those famous mommy moments have stayed with us since The Cosby Show ended in 1992. Most recently, Rashad has appeared in several Broadway productions and movies including Just Wright, For Colored Girls, and Good Deeds. Then there’s Debbie Allen, the baby sister. She brought fierceness to FAME, the 1980’s television series about faculty and students at a New York City performing arts high school. We all remember her piercing, opening line to the show, “You want fame? Well fame costs, and right here is where you start paying, in SWEAT!” Allen’s character, Lydia Grant, was tough. Enough said! And I can’t leave out her role as Anita in the Broadway revival of West Side Story, or her producer-director-actress role for A Different World, and all her unforgettable choreography.
Still not impressed by the Allen sisters? Here are a few more quick facts about these divas.
- They were born in Houston,Texas to an orthodontist father and a poet/art museum director mother.
- Both graduated from Howard University and began their theatrical careers on Broadway.
- Rashad is the 1st African American actress to win a Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play. Allen is a two-time Tony Award nominee and the winner of 3 Emmy awards for Choreography.
- Oh, and they just happen to be naturally gorgeous.
But more than their talents and accolades, I just adore their relationship. From what I’ve seen, Phylicia Rashad and Debbie Allen are sister-friends. They’re nurturing, supportive, and spiritually connected to each other which makes them beyond deserving for the Brown Bella Beauty Spotlight. In my opinion, you couldn’t ask for a better Soul-Sista-Diva duo.
Peace. Love. Sisters.
